Details about Quran Para 1 – Alif laam meem (آلم )

This is the first Para of the Holy Quran which consists of two Surahs of the Holy Quran, Surah Al Fatiha, and Surah Al Baqarah.

Surah Fatiha was revealed in Mecca while Surah Baqarah was revealed in Medina. Al-Fatiha explains the basic tenets of the Quran. Surah Baqarah explains the errors of the followers of earlier prophets.

It also explains social and moral relations. Surah Baqarah contains Ayatul Kursi which has the most powerful verses.

What is the Meaning of Alif Laam Meem in English?

These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’an and none but God (Alone) knows their meanings. They are called Muqatta’at (dis joined or disconnected letters).

29 Surahs out of 114 Surahs have them in their beginning. The exact significance is unknown but Tafsir (Quranic exegesis) has interpreted them as names or qualities of God or content of the respective Surah.

In one interpretation, Alif-Laam-Meem means:

Alif = I am

Laam = An abbreviation of الله “Allah” (God)

Meem = an abbreviation of Al-Aleem or the knowing

So in this case it means, I am God, the Knowing.
